Ninth Sunday of Pentecost Season
Gospel Luke 4:14-21
Reflection 1
The fulfillment of all our hopes
In the synagogue of his own hometown, Jesus read a prophecy from Isaiah and proclaimed its fulfilment.
In Jesus, we see the healing power of God's love and mercy in action.
Jesus came to set people free, not only from their illnesses, but also from the worst condition of all - the slavery to sin and the fear of losing one's life.
It is through God's power alone that we can be saved from hopelessness and emptiness of life. Unfortunately, in this world many people suffer from oppression, starvation, poverty, illnesses and many live in spiritual darkness.
Jesus preached a message of salvation. It included deliverance from sin and sickness. It included repentance and concern for the poor.
Jesus came, anointed of the Spirit, to set us free through the Word and the Spirit.
Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus
In today’s world we need to keep our eyes, minds and hearts fixed on Jesus.
It is a choice to stay focused on ourselves or keep our focus on the Lord.
A thought for the week
We need to open our hearts to the broken body of Christ revealed in our suffering brothers and sisters.
We pray that the Spirit will open our eyes so that we see Christ in all those in need and be bearers of His peace and justice, thus truly bringing Christ into the world in which we live. Gwen Simon
