Eighth Sunday of Pentecost Season
Matthew 12: 14-21
Reflection 1
The Pharisees plot to kill Jesus after he heals a man on the Sabbath. Aware of their intentions, Jesus withdraws, but large crowds follow Him, and He continues to heal them, instructing them not to make Him known. This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah about the Servant of the Lord, highlighting His gentleness, humility, and mission to bring justice to the nations.
In Jesus, we see the healing power of God's love and mercy in action.
Jesus came to set people free, not only from their illnesses, but also from the worst condition of all - the slavery to sin and the fear of losing one's life.
They Conspired against Him
The Pharisees conspired against Jesus after He healed a man on the Sabbath. Their envy and hostility drove them to plot His destruction. This passage reveals the destructive power of envy and serves as a powerful lesson on how our envy can harm others.
Application
We need to acknowledge and seek forgiveness for our envy, which is an essential step toward spiritual growth.
We need to reflect on our thoughts and actions to identify instances where envy has influenced us. We need to Pray and ask forgiveness for the times we have been envious of others.
Jesus' Withdrawal
Jesus showed wisdom in His decision to withdraw. He understood the importance of timing and acted prudently to avoid unnecessary conflict. He left the place of confrontation in order to continue his divine work of healing love and bringing people into communion with him.
Application
Like Jesus, we should choose our battles wisely. Not every confrontation is necessary or beneficial. Sometimes, stepping back can be the most prudent and effective thing we do.
Meekness and humility
Jesus exemplifies perfect meekness and humility, demonstrating His desire to establish His kingdom through the power of love rather than earthly force. He consistently used His gentle strength to heal and comfort, serving others selflessly and showing compassion to all.
Application
As we strive to follow His example, it is crucial to remember the worth and value of every person. We should treat others with respect, avoiding any sense of superiority, and instead, embrace humility in our interactions.
Jesus brings justice to victory
Jesus brings justice to victory by transforming hearts, minds, and establishing God's kingdom through love and compassion, rather than force or power. His mission was to heal and uplift the marginalized. Jesus shows that justice triumphs when it is rooted in love.
Application
In prayer, we can follow Jesus’’ example and find the strength to do the work of justice.
We pray that the Spirit will open our eyes so that we see Christ in all those in need and be bearers of His peace and justice, thus truly bringing Christ into the world in which we live. Gwen Simon
A thought for the week
“Repentance in Christianity is not a return to the provisions of the law, nor to the authenticity of oneself, but rather a return to the love of the living God”. Father Ignatius Dagher
